Dr. Hazlin Hazrin-Chong is the Principal Investigator of Hazlin Lab at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Her research focuses on understanding microbial dynamics in response to climate change and pollution, particularly in mangrove ecosystems.
Hazlin received her PhD in 2014 from the University of New South Wales, where she studied the role of cell attachment and biofilm formation in hydrocarbon biotransformation. Building on her expertise in microbial processes, she now leads research efforts to elucidate the mechanisms of carbon cycling and enhance carbon sequestration in tropical ecosystems. She is also involved in metagenomic studies of urban built environments and research on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in diverse settings.
Hazlin is an advisor to the Joint Academic Microbiology Seminars Kuala Lumpur, a platform for microbiologists to network and collaborate. She also contributes to ‘Fun with Microbes’, an initiative to increase microbiology literacy among Malaysian children. She enjoys spending time with her kids and training as an equestrian.
