Sam Pei has a passion for forensic science and microbiology. Her current research explores the succession of soil microbial communities associated with animal carcass decomposition using molecular fingerprinting. She hopes to utilise these postmortem data to estimate the postmortem interval (a.k.a. time of death), a crucial factor in solving criminal cases. Additionally, she finds it truly fascinating to explore how the postmortem microbiome contributes to the soil nutrient cycle in a tropical climate.
Beyond spending countless hours in the lab, she is also passionate about sports and the arts. Hiking and jogging have been part of her life since childhood. Recently, she began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, seeing it as a way to build resilience—a skill invaluable in navigating the challenges and setbacks of research. And if you’d like a pencil portrait of yourself, she’d be delighted to draw one!
